MasterShield vs Other Gutter Guards

In this gutter guard comparison, we share MasterShield features that are critical elements of our patented microfiltration technology (we license seven U.S. patents from gutter guard innovator Alex Higginbotham). Use the table below to compare MasterShield features to other types of gutter guards: screens, sponges, curves, louvers – even other micro mesh filters.

MicroVortex Microfiltration: The “Impossible Cloth”

The MicroVortex Microfilter

  • The next generation filter from the innovator of this patented technology
  • More water permeable than other fine filters, they clean of oils 10x better than earlier technology
  • Constructed of 316 “surgical grade” stainless steel for strength and durability; a  Higginbotham industry innovation
  • Filters water to a standard higher than most municipal water companies: us: 50 microns, them: 80 microns
  • A completely enclosed porous cover means birds and bees will not find a dry place to nest
  • Gaps, louvers or other openings in most systems let in pine needles,  leaves and other debris, leading to hidden clogs
  • They rely on rainwater to “flush” the gutter clean, but most rainfalls don’t create the water volume or velocity to do this
  • Debris remains undetected, causing clogs and premature aging of a gutter
  • Many systems create dry, attractive places for birds and bees to nest
  • No other “fine filter” system mentions, addresses or guarantees they will self clean of naturally occurring shingle oils.

MasterShield becomes an extension of the roof, mirroring roof pitch as closely as possible

Pitch MasterShield with the roof

  • Wind flow down the roof is used more efficiently and effectively to shed dry debris
  • Water comes in contact with debris on an angle rather than a flat surface, it can flow through to the filter easier than systems that sit flat
  • Installation methodology approved by largest shingle manufacturer, GAF not to void shingle warranty.
  • Porous surface causes debris to dry faster than it would on either a solid or flat surface
  • Self-cleaning properties means that MasterShield stays maintenance free more effectively that other systems
  • Requires HydroVortex technology not found in other gutter guards to make this installation approach possible
  • Does not cause the shingle lift
  • Wet debris clings to cover surface and follows water into the gutter, leading to hidden clogs
  • Many systems become shelves, trapping debris below or behind shingles where wind flow cannot reach
  • Debris collects and stays wet longer, water can wick up through it and any shingles it touches; it can also come in contact with your sub roof.  Shingles age faster, dry rot and other damage can also occur
  • Shingles often extend over other systems, dramatically reducing the water receiving area of the product
  • Ongoing maintenance is required to stop debris build up on the gutter guard to allow rainwater in
  • Once debris build up occurs, moss and algae problems can quickly develop

Patented HydroVortex Technology

Our HydroVortex Technology in Action

  • Built into the aluminum body of the product, this stops the natural forward flow of water off a roof and redirects it through the microfilter
  • Creates a powerful vacuum effect to siphon water into a gutter FAST
  • Allows the system to work at with all roof pitches: from flat to vertical
  • Technology not found in any other system
  • In combination with our MicroVortex filter, creates the most advanced self cleaning properties found in any gutter guard
  • Century-old design featured in most systems is flawed, they let in debris when it rains
  • Once the lower part of a reverse curve coats with shingle oils, water flows off the system and not into the gutter
  • The harder it rains, the more debris these systems let into the gutter
  • Hidden debris causes aluminum or sealant corrosion, shortening life of the gutter
  • Other products featuring fine filters rely solely on gravity, they cannot adapt to roof pitch  without water overflowing the system

Strength and flexibility built into one design

Gutter Guard Strength Test Featuring MasterShield

  • Shingle-Safe™ back allows you to adapt to roof pitch and not impact your shingle warranty
  • Tested to handle heavy snow loads.  Metal memory allows it to snap back to its distinct profile
  • Profile design not impacted by years of harsh winters
  • Don’t want to go under shingles? No problem, system can be adapted to wedge design
  • Front to back flexibility, side to side rigidity not found in any other products
  • Roll formed like your gutter so that it will expand and contract like the materials it is in contact with
  • Rigid products can cause shingles to
  • Flat or low pitched systems create a shelf and trap and hold debris
  • Under the shingle gutter guards that get installed through shingles  can void your shingle warranty
  • Can be unsightly, doubling height/width of gutter
  • No other stainless steel gutter cover has…

Installs on Most Gutter Style and Materials

Fascia Gutter with MasterShield Gutter Guard

  • Installs on any new or existing gutters
  • Virtually any style and all common sizes: traditional
  • K-style, half-round, Yankee, Fascia, internal gutters
  • Wide range of colors to match shingles or gutters
  • Can require the complete replacement of all gutters
  • Can require the replacement of all downspouts
  • Complicated installations can cause labor costs tobe too high to justify installing on existing gutters

  1. Thick Aluminum!  They’ll make you do the “touch test”, and tell you how strong it is.  Is strength important?  Yes and no.  First, think of your existing gutters. They have never been thick, they’re made to adapt and adjust to wavy fascia boards, warped sub roofs and the inevitable drop towards the downspout.  The biggest issue is working with roof shingles.  Thick aluminum can cause a trough to form in the shingles before the gutter.  Rainwater builds up here and seeps in under the shingles at the seams.  Dry rot can occur above every gutter run causing thousand of dollars of damage since shingles, the sub roof and rafters may sustain damage.
  2. Unique One-Piece System!  One piece systems have been around since the early 1900s.  They tend to work well when the weather is dry, and let in debris through the gap that runs the whole gutter run when it rains..  Systems that use hanger only under the curve can actually start to yawn open over time, particularly in climates with snow and ice.  Many of these systems are installed with oversized downspouts or open for “easy cleaning”.

    Opens for Easy Cleaning

  3. They’ll clean it when it clogs!  Do you really want to install a gutter guard that doesn’t do what you expect it to?  Cleaning it for free when it clogs doesn’t solve the problem you set out to solve, which was keeping debris out of your gutter.  Cleaning it for free solves their problem, because they don’t have a system that will perform like they advertise it will.
